An uncanny take on a common typology

DESCRIPTION

In response to the paraphernalia exhibition’s theme, Alien, “Beam” offers an uncanny take on a familiar typology, translating the antique chamberstick into a UFO-like domestic artifact. Through a combination of old-world and futuristic details, a seemingly recognizable yet equally out-of-place object emerges—one that looks at how forms associated with science fiction and the otherworldly can be reimagined through a language of rational, functional design. The result feels as much a piece of lighting or a candle as it does a foreign piece of technology.

The piece features a sandblasted aluminum base that supports the scientific glass tube and houses the electrical components. A smaller jacketed inner tube is sandblasted, allowing light to travel up the column. An aluminum cap rests atop, with a mirror-polished spherical form nesting in the tube — reflecting light downward and creating a tracker-beam-like glow.
